PMQs: Tory MP asks if Theresa May will ask him to vote against his parents
In the aftermath of the leaked memo and Boris’ revelation that the UK will ‘probably leave the customs union’, Brexit was brought to the fore again at PMQs yesterday. Of the questions, one put forward by Tory MP, Alberto Costa, is worth highlighting.
Here’s Alberto Costa’s question and response from Theresa May. Alberto Costa is the Tory MP for South Leicestershire.
The Vote Leave campaign were very clear that the rights of EU citizens would not be affected if they voted to leave the EU. My parents are Italian, they have never naturalised, and they’ve been in this country for 50 years.
Can the Prime Minister assure me that she will never instruct me to vote in a lobby to take away the rights of my parents, and millions of EU citizens”
I want, intend, and expect to be able to guarantee the rights of those EU citizens living here in the UK.
But I also want to see the rights of UK citizens living in EU member states being guaranteed too. As I’ve said previously I would hope this is a position which we can discuss with my European colleagues at an early stage”
In political fighting about the economy and immigration control, it’s important to remember that there are already millions of people – EU citizens in the UK and British citizens living in the EU – that have been doing so for decades.

And on the government’s plan for Brexit…
Asked by Jeremy Corbyn about what the government’s plan was if the memo was incorrect in its assertions, she duly revealed their plan.
We do have a plan. Our plan is to deliver the best possible deal”
This response left some unimpressed. But it is what we’ve come to expect from a prime minister who seems more comfortable with playing her cards close to her chest.
PM: “Our plan is to deliver the best possible deal”…the new ‘Brexit means Brexit’….similarly meaningless #PMQs
